One of the most important steps to the Canadian Immigration Dream is to do the IELTS exam, and get a good score for it.
Although the minimum required band for Canadian immigration is a Band 6 in each section (and sometimes less for PNP nomination), it is always prudent to aim higher, especially if you are principal applicant, as the higher bands will obviously give you a higher score for CRS. And with the current trend of CRS scores being no less that 458 points, it’s best to be prepared and maximise your CRS score.
There’s not much that can be done for the CRS score in terms of your age, education or work experience, but the language tests are something you can control. But unless you are proficient in French, the English Language Test (whether you take the IELTS or CELPIP) is the best chance of improving your CRS score.
So what can you do to improve your Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening scores?
Well, you can keep taking and retaking the IELTS exams, hoping to improve your band, even if it’s just by 0.5. But frankly, that’s a very expensive and time-consuming process, and in the end, you still may not achieve the score you were aiming for, as many who have done this will attest.
A better option would to be take an IELTS training and preparation course with a qualified trainer, who will guide you to achieve the highest possible band.
Let me be clear though: IELTS trainers are not miracle workers; achieving the desired Band level will depend on your commitment and effort together with the IELTS trainer’s guidance and help. You have to be prepared to put in a minimum of 30 to 40 hours in classes, as well as practicing outside of classes, to achieve Bands 8 or 9.
The IELTS trainer will work with you to improve in the areas you require, whether it’s all 4 sections or just 1 or 2. Most often, the main areas that have required assistance have been Writing and Speaking.
The question you are probably asking right now is, “But where do I find a good IELTS trainer?”
There are many options available: private tutors, training institutes, vlogs and blogs. Personally, and as a IELTS trainer myself, I would go for the first 2 options. Nothing beats the face-to-face interaction you get with your instructor and the customised, specialised content and guidance you receive.
If you are in the UAE (or even if you are not), my recommendation is to contact Ms. Nusrat Kabir, who has several years’ experience in IELTS instruction and preparation classes, and currently works at The Language Post. She can conduct the lessons online via video chat, or face-to-face. Her rates are extremely reasonable, and as previous students will attest, your band level will improve by at least 1 level at the completion of the training course.
You can reach out directly to Ms. Kabir and The Language Post via email (thelanguagepost@gmail.com) or mobile text/call (00971507871958).
